The archive of the Hanover region was established in 1978 as an archive of the Hanseatic District of Hanover, Germany. Its task is to secure and permanently preserve documents that have been created by the regional administration and its legal predecessors and which are of lasting value for legal research and research. In addition, the archive builds additional collections on the history of the region. Location of the archive is the castle Landestrost in Neustadt am Rübenberge.

On 1 November 2001, the Hanover Region, with extended responsibilities, took the place of the Landkreis Hannover. They also took over the duties of the previously independent municipal association Greater Hanover.
